He speaks!

Two days after he turned 11 months (June 10), Kai said his first word.

We've been talking for awhile about what it might be. There are the usuals - "mama" or "dada". Or maybe "ball" or "Snax". Or maybe something completely off the wall that we didn't expect.

I've been coaching him on "mama" and "dada" for awhile. He's been able to say "mamamamamama" and "bababababa" and "dadadada" for a few months, so we knew he has the syllables down. It's just a matter of stopping at two syllables and knowing what it means.

On Sunday, we sent Kai to Waumbaland - the children's area at our church - while we were leaders in another area. When we picked him up, they said he had been saying "dadadada" a lot, so I asked him to say "dada." And he did! We tried again to see if it was a fluke and he said it again. And later that day, AJ came into the room and Kai looked at him and yelled "dada." So I guess he's got it.

It's a little funny because we don't actually call AJ "dada", it's usually just "dad". But I don't mind that "mama" wasn't first.  M's are tough and I feel pretty confident in his affections.

So our little guy has taken another leap into toddlerhood. Maybe we'll look back all too fondly on the days when he couldn't speak, but I think every new step is exciting. Besides, we've still got a little while before the copycatting and "but why's" begin.
